Funny, tender, and occasionally filthy, Foster Gareau’s debut poetry chapbook, Folded Oceans, traces queer longing, recovery from alcoholism, homelessness, family memory, and failed romance through some of the ordinary places where a life gets reassembled. Structured around three “folds”—paper, linen, and water—the book uses the medium’s small scale and physical limits as part of its form; folding memory fragments, bodies, poems and rooms into one another.
Foster Gareau is a queer French-Canadian poet, writer, sentimentalist and formerly unhoused alcoholic in recovery. His work has been supported by the Canada Council for the Arts and appears in Arc Poetry, The Malahat Review, PRISM international, the New York Review of Smut and elsewhere. His debut chapbook, Folded Oceans, was shortlisted for the 2025 Vallum Chapbook Award, and his poetry was longlisted for Ploughshares’ 2026 Emerging Writers’ Contest. He is one of seven poets selected for the League of Canadian Poets’ 2026–27 P.K. Page Mentorship and is pursuing an MA in Creative Writing at Concordia University in Montréal.
